The first application built into the Cuda 12000 platform was a cable modem termination system [CMTS]. Packet telephony is the next step, said Mitch Auster, ADC’s vice president of product management and marketing.
“We’ve developed another application that is delivered with hardware and software of the packet telephony module,” he said. “Operators are free to deploy Cuda 12000s with CMTS cards, gigabit Ethernet routed interface cards and packet telephony modules all in the same chassis.”
The plug-in module offers operators a number of ways to deliver IP telephony over the same platform being used to deliver high-speed data services, he said.
“If they have a Class 5 circuit switch or a relationship with a CLEC that has a switch and they want to offer IP-based telephony to a particular neighborhood, they just have to put one of these telephony modules into a Cuda chassis,” Auster explained. “It is wholly self-contained within the module, and that functionality can be applied to subscribers who are connected to CMTS in the same chassis, connected to CMTS cards in other Cuda chassis or connected to CMTS systems from other vendors.”
ADC’s CMTS system is based on technology developed by Broadband Access Systems, which ADC bought last year.
