The announcement and a technology demonstration came amid the broader unveiling of Android 3.1, the so-called “Ice Cream Sandwich” release of the Honeycomb operating system. The new version will be available in the fourth quarter, and reportedly is expected to be used in some Google TV-related gear. Android 3.1 offers many new features, including enhanced Wi-Fi networking support and an application programming interface for hosting for USB devices.
The Android@Home system will be Wi-Fi based, but also may involve other connectivity technologies, according to Google officials. It is not yet clear to what degree Android@Home may challenge other in-home, short-range connectivity and management approaches. An Android@Home demonstration at the conference involved use of an Android device to control home stereo speakers, attendees said.
