The firm additionally pinpointed the Apple iPad — released just 14 months ago this week — as now being responsible for more than 1% of all worldwide Internet browsing and for more than 2.1% of overall browsing in the United States.

Further highlighting Apple's role in connecting Americans to the mobile Web, the firm found that 25.5% of mobile Web browsing in the United States is now done on an iPad — an impressive percentage for such a young device, and one that earned it third position. The iPhone took the top ranking, accounting for 35.2 percent of the U.S mobile Web browsing market share, followed by Android devices, with a 31.6% share.

A slimmer slice of the pie — 6.9% — went to BlackBerry devices, while Symbian, Java ME and Windows Mobile combined accounted for less than 1%.

Worldwide, mobile and tablet platforms now account for more than 5% of all Internet browsing, while in the United States that figure has reached 8%.

In May, by NetMarketShare's count, the iPad's browsing share was at 0.92%, compared to the Samsung Galaxy Tab's 0.018% share, the Motorola Xoom's 0.012% share and the BlackBerry PlayBook's 0.003%.

Put another way, wrote the firm, the Apple tablet has "53 times the usage share of its nearest competitor."
