Xedia adds Internet access solution

Xedia Corp. is introducing an NxT-1 Internet access solution as part of its Access Point line. The Access Point T-1 can have up to eight integrated T-1 interfaces that support both frame relay and point-to-point protocol. The device can be deployed either at the customer premises or regional points of presence to allow either the end user or the service provider to allocate bandwidth among users and prioritize traffic.

"It's a way to place our product on the network edge, classify traffic and map it to the backbone," said Karen Barton, Xedia's marketing vice president. "Business-quality Internet access is the agenda, and we're scaling to meet the needs of T-1 access customers."

The device uses class-based queuing to manage bandwidth and measure traffic to allow usage-based billing. The Access Point T-1 includes two features not in previous Access Point devices: standards-based support for Internet access quality of service and AutoClass, a proprietary feature that allows users to set traffic classification rules and have the device impose them automatically based on traffic patterns.

As with other Access Point devices, the Access Point T-1 allocates bandwidth to specific users based on need. The class-based queuing allows certain traffic classes to take priority and "borrow" bandwidth from other users when necessary. The device monitors such activity and allows service providers to allocate more bandwidth or charge users for use of additional bandwidth, depending on the service agreement.
