The AnyMedia MultiService module connects the 5ESS to asynchronous transfer mode and Internet protocol (IP) networks and lets network operators package data services such as modem pooling, packet voice, Internet access, digital subscriber line, frame relay or private lines with their voice offerings.

"This allows integration between voice and packet networks," said Diane Herr, product marketing vice president for Lucent's switching and access solutions business group. "We're taking another step in our evolution of the 5ESS to bridge different types of networks."

The alternatives are for a carrier to maintain a separate data network or to put IP or ATM switches in front of or behind a switch such as the 5ESS, Herr said.

"This extends the IP and ATM capability into a switch module as opposed to a separate platform in the same [central office]," said Mike Arellano, an analyst with Degas Communications Group. "There are a lot of COs in major metro areas where you would expect a lot of demand for these types of services."

Arellano said the Lucent module is comparable to Northern Telecom's Universal Edge 1000, which can provide similar capabilities to carriers looking to upgrade Nortel CO switches.

One of the functions of the AnyMedia module has an Internet service provider angle. The modem pooling option can be used to lease modem capacity to ISPs, preventing the ISP from having to buy more modems.

Lucent is planning trials of the modem pooling and data aggregation capabilities with existing AnyMedia customers, Herr said.

ON-LINE Back in the game, Part 1 The Communications Workers of America ends its strike against U S West. Now the carrier can get back to the wonderful world of arguing, deploying and merging that is telecom.

Don't surf, be happy A new study associates avid Internet use with a decline in size of one's social circle and an increase in depression. There's a good reason for plain old telephone service.

OFF-LINE Back in the game, Part 2 But Oregon regulators cite U S West for not keeping its promise to provide free cell phones or $100 to customers who had to wait for wireline service. Rural customers won't be ignored.

Telecom's a bear Many were thankful they weren't Tellabs or Ciena when those stocks plummeted. But that security proved false when all telecom stocks took a beating in the Dow's drop last week.
