The Win-100 fast Ethernet system is designed around a shortage that WinNet noticed in metropolitan area network bandwidth, said Jim Reynolds, senior product manager for the manufacturer. "No one really talks about it," he said.

"We're providing the same bandwidth as inside of a building so you can get a seamless connection to a campus," Reynolds said. WinNet is one of the most economical dollar-per-megabit services available, he added.

"There's a definite market for it," said Kristen Flynn, analyst for WAN hardware for The Yankee Group. Part of WinNet's challenge will be getting the word out about its unique product, she said.

Currently, the Win-100 is available to operate in the 23, 26 and 38 GHz frequencies. WinNet plans to market the device mostly through value-added resellers or on an OEM basis, but it will also have a direct sales force. The company has been working with Bosch Telecom and hopes that company will offer WinNet products to license holders looking for solutions for customers.

Cisco Systems uses WinNet as a backup to connect its campuses and has used the system in a primary mode. WinNet also has a deployment with the Lemon Grove School district in San Diego to link schools and community services.
