Viatel files for Chapter 11

New York-based Viatel filed for Chapter 11 protection last week and announced 350 layoffs, citing the cash drain of its U.S. residential voice business acquired from Destia Communications, which will be closed. The company said it wants to conserve cash resources to preserve its pan-European broadband network and enterprise business via a strategic alliance or stand-alone restructuring.
