WHEN THE MOB STARTS GRUMBLING

The FCC's annual assessment of Bell companies isn't very flattering to our regional service providers. Fast growth and mergers seem to have affected carriers' quality of service in 2000. Ameritech, which was immersed in a complicated merger with SBC, fared worst, breaking records in numbers of complaints and wait time for repairs. But U S West didn't seem to have the same trouble after its buyout by Qwest. The reconfigured Bell either stayed steady or improved in every category. And although Qwest had trouble running its COs properly, it wasn't the worst carrier in that category. With an average 961.1 seconds of downtime per switch, Sprint gets that label.
