The deal means Verizon will exclusively use the MSN portal, eliminating all other portals — such as AOL and Yahoo — from the decks of wireless phones. However, the company insists it won't operate a closed environment.

“It's still completely open,” said Jim Stratton, vice president and chief marketing officer for Verizon Wireless. “We will import third-party content as needed.”

Stratton said the alliance would be a powerful advantage in the business market because the two companies can port desktop applications to the mobile market.

“Microsoft has more than 6 million applications developers in their community,” Stratton said. “We'll have a large pool of talent and time to market advantage.”

The two companies also have committed to working on next-generation offerings such as location-based services.
