Metro magic; Give me a 'G'
Redback Networks plans to acquire privately held Merlin Systems, which makes metro optical products, for approximately $57 million. The deal is expected to close in the third fiscal quarter. The companies have worked together on Redback's SmartEdge products.

A new standard called generalized multiprotocol label switching, or G-MPLS, is surfacing. All-optical switch vendors Accelite Networks and NTT are developing terabit-size switches with G-MPLS at the core. The switches are intended to add capabilities while simultaneously reducing costs.
