Metrics for a merger

If the pending AT&T/BellSouth merger ultimately closes, about 49% of the total consumer market will be controlled by three service providers — AT&T, Verizon Communications and Comcast, according to a recent report from market research firm TNS Telecoms, which studies the market on a quarterly basis. The two former Bell companies in that group also would account for the majority of the business market, with AT&T and Verizon getting about 55% of business service spending, TNS research stated.

Looking solely at the former, a combined AT&T and BellSouth would control 22% of all consumer dollars spent on telecom services, including video services, and 34% of dollars spent in the business market. Specifically in the wireline phone market, the combined entity would inhale 37% of consumer spending, according to TNS Telecoms.
