Lucent chooses Wireless '99 for product debut

After a previous unveiling in the Asian market, Lucent Technologies' Economical Power Solution 4802 battery plant will get its North American and European debut at Wireless '99 this week in New Orleans. The 48 VDC battery plant targets applications at GSM wireless base stations, large transmission sites, microwave transmission sites and PBXs.The product has a modular front access and rear access, N plus 1 redundant architecture with a rackmount chassis. Other features include hot-insertion rectifiers, two plug-in rectifiers per shelf, capability to accept two strings of batteries, standard office alarm interface and battery thermal compensation.

Also, the EPS 4802 offers remote access monitoring capabilities, which are becoming increasingly popular in battery plant deployments. The remote monitoring option can be provided through the SC312 Controller, which simplifies system operations, monitoring, and status and alarm reporting. The SC312 also initiates battery management functions, such as thermal slope compensation and low-voltage disconnect (LVD).

An alarm distribution module provides the interface between the SC312 Controller and the host system, and allows customized signal mapping. The LVD contactor resides in top-mounted DC distribution panel with 12 circuit breakers. In addition, power and backup capabilities can be supplemented through an expansion bay that can accommodate four additional rectifiers in a two-shelf configuration. This increases system power capacity from the standard 4000 W to 12,000 W (or 10,000 W with N plus 1 redundancy). Four optional battery shelves for two extra strings of batteries can also be included in the bay.All of these features culminate in multiple general benefits to be gained by deploying the system. In terms of economics, the costly system engineering and testing associated with a piecemeal system is eliminated. Time and expense for installation and maintenance are minimized, and upgrades are simple and cost-effective.Among other benefits, the hot-swappable rectifiers and parallel operation ensure continuous performance, and the SC312 centralizes system management functions.

Lucent Technologies' Power Systems Unit is located in Mesquite, Texas.
