The product set incorporates Premisys Communications' integrated access solutions at the customer premises and Lucent's digital access and cross-connect system in the network.
Three new products will support the offering: the Adaptive Access Concentrator 400, an OEM version of the Premisys Streamline; the Integrated Office Router, a card that plugs into the AAC 400; and the DACS Network Director, which provides element and service management for the integrated access devices.
The solution is targeted primarily at competitive local exchange carriers looking to attract business customers, said Hubert Kostal, Lucent's manager of data network offers. The key feature, he said, is the ability to perform card-level upgrades as service mixes and technologies evolve.
The Integrated Office Router is an essential element, said Doug Hilmes, area vice president for Lucent sales at Premisys. It will allow CLECs to target T-1 (1.5 Mb/s) service at companies with five or more DS-0s (64 kb/s). Companies with T-1 connections typically have unused DS-0 channels within the T-1, he said, but the integrated router will enable incremental services such as Internet access over the additional DS-0s.
The solution should appeal to its target market because deployment is fast and services can be turned up quickly, said Tim Smith, principal analyst for wide area networking at Dataquest. But the integrated router may not be as advantageous as Premisys believes. "Any type of routing technology that doesn't say Cisco immediately starts at a disadvantage," Smith said.
