The CPX-1000 is akin to a "packet front end for the switched network," said David Frankel, president of Jetstream. "Its primary function is the translation between the world of cells and packets and the world of time division multiplexing traditionally used in the [public network]. It also has the signaling, control and management functions required to deploy and manage a service like this."

Unlike many TDM gateways, the CPX-1000 focuses on local service delivery, Frankel added. Jetstream is targeting competitive local exchange carriers and sees a need for its integrated access device in the small business arena. "There are 7 million small businesses, and 95% of them use 12 or fewer telephone lines," Frankel said. "Our focus is to enable CLECs to cost effectively go after that huge set of customers and give them those integrated services."

Typically, if voice and data run over the same DSL line, a POTS splitter will strip off the data and send it through the DSL access multiplexer to the backbone network, while forwarding voice to the public network, said Beth Gage, senior broadband consultant with TeleChoice. With the CPX-1000, CLECs can install one unified network and run voice over it as a service. The CPX-1000 peels voice traffic off the data network and puts it into a Class 5 switch. "This allows CLECs to purchase unbundled network elements and deploy voice and data on that line. You don't see any CLECs offering bundled voice and data today," she said.
