INTELLIGENCE FROM THE BROADBAND ECONOMY

The early-adopter phase of any new technology creates a lot of excitement. But by the time a new technology goes mainstream, it no longer feels “new” to those within the industry. So it's important to remember that the average customer is just warming to the idea. They have opinions about which service provider they might want to get the service from — almost 30% have no preference — and when they might adopt it (nearly 50% of consumers who said they were likely to adopt voice over IP said they would likely do so within six months to two years,) but in TeleGeography's latest VoIP report, nearly all likely subscribers agreed on one thing — their reason for adopting VoIP is price. Reliability and E911 take a back seat for now. “When VoIP becomes a full market service that everyone will use, [service providers] will need to address the reliability issue. For those adopting it now, I don't think that's a problem,” said Stephan Beckert, analyst at TeleGeography.
