INTELLIGENCE FROM THE BROADBAND ECONOMY
802.16-2004 product certification testing under the WiMAX Forum-Certified equipment program begins in less than a month, and though “WiMAX-compliant,” “WiMAX-ready” or “pre-WiMAX” gear is already common, the market will not begin in earnest until first-round certification ends later this year. That hasn't stopped anyone from projecting what the WiMAX market will be worth and how it might affect the rest of the broadband wireless market. The Telecommunications Industry Association's 2005 Telecommunications Market Review and Forecast states that WiMAX infrastructure will grow annually at a rate of about 110% through 2008. That report also estimates that WiMAX and Wi-Fi capex combined will reach $29.3 billion by 2008. Around that time, according to a report from Sky Light Research, 802.16e Mobile WiMAX will provide a further boost. Sky Light estimates that 30% of global point-to-multipoint equipment revenue could come from 802.16e and the Korean WiBRO standard by 2009.
