INTELLIGENCE FROM THE BROADBAND ECONOMY
Despite a concerted effort by the European Union to promote broadband competition among DSL and cable modem providers, DSL continued to dominate as the technology of choice across the continent. According to the latest numbers from The DSL Forum, service providers in EU countries added 13.7 million subscribers in 2004, which is roughly twice the number of total cable modem subscribers, according to a study by Market Intelligence Center. When measured as DSL as a percentage of the population, European nations, in fact, take up 13 of the top 20 spots. On a global basis, both the Middle East/Africa and Latin America regions grew at better than 100%, though combined, they represent a small fraction of the total 96.9 million DSL subscribers. In the U.S., DSL also is gaining strength but still trails the overall number of cable modems. According to estimates from the National Cable & Telecommunications Association, total cable modem users in the U.S will top 20 million.
