HP adds ATM for MPEG testing >BY Chris Bucholtz, West Coast Bureau Chief

Network operators and MPEG equipment managers will be able to eradicate bugs in their systems more easily, thanks to MPEG 2 transport stream tester software that takes greater advantage of asynchronous transfer mode technology.

The tester, Hewlett-Packard's E4226B MPEG 2 protocol viewer, will allow carriers to troubleshoot video servers, video headends and set-top decoder boxes, as well as isolate software problems in the early stages of development.

The software, which functions on HP's Broadband Series Test System, is the first to support MPEG 2 over ATM adaptation layer 1, as outlined by the ITU's I.363 specification. It also adds filtering capabilities to HP's E4226A protocol viewer, allowing users to specify the type of data they need to access.
