The trial started in August and included 20 employees from both companies. It used two modems-Westell Technologies' FlexCap, based on carrierless amplitude/phase modulation, and Amati Communications' Overture 4, based on discrete multitone line code. Both modems will be used in the trial's second phase, with Amati's higher-speed Overture 8 to be added later.

In November, when GTE asked for businesses interested in signing up for a second phase, more than 600 companies responded in less than 10 days. One hundred Seattle-area businesses and 50 additional Microsoft employees will join the trial during the next 45 days.

GTE plans to offer commercial service in early 1997 with price ranges from $40 to $100 a month, depending on service class.
