GTE NETWORK SERVICES WIRELINE SALES

Last week, Citizens Utilities agreed to buy 58,723 telephone access lines in Nebraska from GTE for $204 million in cash. Citizens, which also is majority owner of Electric Lightwave, will operate more than 70,000 access lines in Nebraska by combining the new GTE territories with existing exchanges.

The sale, which is expected to close next year, puts GTE near its goal of divesting 1.6 million access lines in non-core areas this year. Thus far, the company has sold 1.4 million lines in 10 states, mostly to existing telcos. GTE currently is looking forbuyers for 200,000 lines in Illinois and Oklahoma.
