German UMTS auction tops $45 billion

Germany last week awarded six licenses for 10 MHz of spectrum, which will be used to offer third generation wireless services. The 13-day auction raised $45.85 billion, more than $10 billion more than was generated from the winning bids in the U.K. auction in the spring. Winning operators include Deutsche Telekom, BT, Vodafone AirTouch, a consortium of France Telecom and Germany's MobilCom, a consortium of Finland's Sonera and Spain's Telefonica, and a consortium of Dutch provider KPN Mobile and NTT DoCoMo.
