Fiber Optics Demand Spurs Investment
To keep up with growing demand for fiber optics, Lucent Technologies said last week it will invest an additional $350 million throughout the next two years in its manufacturing operations.

Lucent will put the bulk of the money in its Norcross, Ga., plant, with the rest going to its other fiber operations throughout the world. The Norcross plant is the hub of Lucent's global fiber optics operations. Since its opening in 1972, it has shipped enough fiber to customers worldwide to circle the Earth more than 1000 times.
