The company determined that a digital subscriber line would enable it to transmit at higher bandwidth rates than ISDN or T-1 connections-and at a lower cost. With DSL, the bandwidth of installed copper wires in the last mile is boosted so that the lines can support the delivery of broadband services.
In order to provide its customers with high-quality videoconferencing services that operate from DSL equipment, Digital Select chose a videoconferencing system from Intelect Network Technologies that is based on the Wavelet video compression algorithm and that uses Internet protocol.
Digital Select's DSL service transports IP and accelerates the bandwidth capacity of the copper lines typically found in the last mile that separates subscribers from today's modern fiber optic communications network. For Digital Select, this higher capacity meant that existing copper lines could be used to deliver broadband services such as videoconferencing and high-speed Internet access to both business and residential subscribers.
