DSC will use the software initially to enhance its INfusion signal transfer point network signaling hub and, later, to improve the capabilities of other telecommunications products, said Bill Johnson, a product manager with Dallas-based DSC.
"We had worked with Niris in our digital cross-connects as an access mechanism for signaling, so we had been aware for some time of its capabilities," Johnson said. "When Unisys decided to get out of the network management business, it was natural for us to take this step since Niris is portable, and it made sense to integrate it into our product.
Niris' integration into the INfusion signal transfer point system lets it monitor usage measurements and call billing for both wireline and wireless signaling networks. Service providers with the enhanced system will be able to measure SS7 messages for call setup and services, collect statistics on those messages and produce detailed billing records.
The newly enhanced INfusion signal transfer point will also provide a signaling solution for meeting requirements for network unbundling and resale of services.
"The purchase of the software means we won't have to develop all these things on our own," said Johnson. "This is going to get us to market much faster.
One of the key applications for the improved system will be billing. "If you can track services with full accuracy, you can bill with full accuracy," Johnson said. "And if you can do that, you can move from a monthly rate service billing arrangement to a more accurate, bill-as-you-go arrangement that's more in line with the vision carriers have for selling expanded services.
The enhanced signal transfer point will also provide Global Title Translation, gateway screening, local number portability and expanded usage management and call billing.
Service providers will be able to accurately bill for services they deliver to other providers, including wholesale signaling use, Advanced Intelligent Network services and basic services that use SS7 technology.
Using the new feature, network operators will also be able to monitor their use of leased facilities and verify subsequent billing from other providers.
