DOJ OKs wireless joint venture

The Department of Justice last week approved the wireless joint venture between SBC and BellSouth on the condition that the companies divest overlapping businesses in 16 markets. The deal, which would create the nation's second-largest wireless carrier, still requires a go-ahead from the FCC. Wireless operations to be sold include Los Angeles, Indianapolis, New Orleans, Baton Rouge, La., and Bloomington, Ind. The companies also must sell one of two businesses in several rural service areas in Louisiana and Indiana.
