COPING WITH UNEMPLOYMENT

Though 2001 brought telecom layoffs by the thousands, TelecomCareers.net is forecasting hope for 2002. Telecom hiring and staffing companies surveyed by the site said they wouldn't be cutting any more staff in 2002, and more than half of them said they would add employees this year. Those surveyed also predicted the state of the industry wouldn't be as weak in 2002 as in 2001, though many refused to go so far as to say the industry would be strong.

In addition to interviewing employment companies, TelecomCareers.net surveys a pool of employed and unemployed telecom workers each month on how they are coping in the depressed telecom economy. The following are some of the results from the December 2001 survey.

The wired household

A recent consumer survey conducted by Parks Associates found that Americans are warming up to the idea of the “wired home.” Not surprising, the 212 respondents with broadband access were the most interested in all of the solutions suggested.
