The carrier will test TruePosition, which uses time difference of arrival technology to figure latitude, longitude, velocity and direction of travel, along a 50-mile stretch of the New Jersey Turnpike in several counties in New Jersey. The test will gauge TruePosition's effectiveness in locating cellular users traveling along this stretch of highway.

Comcast is interested in location technology for the added value it could offer through new location-based services, such as Emergency 911 location, fraud detection and location-sensitive billing, although the company has not decided if it will implement the technology on a commercial basis, a spokeswoman said.
