Cidco aims to simplify voice mail
Promoting hands-free, simplified voice mail retrieval, Cidco Inc. last week introduced the VM100, an answering machine-like product that gives consumers one-touch access to voice mail and alerts them to new messages.

The product makes it easy for users to navigate telcos' network voice mail, said Mark Jensen, director of product management for Cidco. Testing found that recalling keypad codes and maneuvering through voice mail were deterrents to consumer use of the systems, he said.
"The idea behind this is [it's] a vehicle that makes it extremely easy for [customers] to use. It allows people to get the hang of it quick," Jensen said.
Along with a message indicator light, the VM100 features navigation buttons, including one that brings users into voice mail using their preprogrammed access numbers and passwords.
Sprint was the first telco to sign on to distribute the product, and other top-tier telcos have expressed interest, Jensen said, though he could not divulge any names.
Although the VM100 has a $39.95 value, companies could use it to promote their network voice mail, offering it at a reduced price, for the cost of shipping or even free with service, Jensen said.
"If there is a consumer perception that voice mail is difficult to use, this is the perfect solution," he added. "The [regional] Bell operating companies will offer it and, in turn, that will reduce churn."
One analyst, however, pointed out that the product is not ideal for all consumers. One of the reasons voice mail became so popular is because consumers didn't want their countertops cluttered with answering machines any longer, according to Cathy Gadecki, director of consulting for TeleChoice.
Also, the VM100 is not practical for people who primarily check voice mail while away from home, she added. "The fact that I couldn't use it from the road would be a further [deterrent], because I'd still have to remember all those codes."
