The vendor's SmartPath routing system consists of hardware for wireless data devices and software for customer-operated servers. The platform allows users to maintain simultaneous connections to disparate data networks, including cellular digital packet data (CDPD), digital personal communication services, analog cellular, satellite and private radio networks (see figure).

The platform can be configured to select the most appropriate transmission path based on preset parameters, such as least-cost routing and time of day.

"It's hard for a single network or technology to provide all the coverage and capacity customers need," said Keith Buchanan, director of new business development at Padcom, which is based in Bethlehem, Pa. "Multiple networks provide a reliable connection and ensure that every possible means is available to deliver those messages. With SmartPath, customers can build a single, logical network."

Padcom's technology could prove to be a boon to both public and private network operators. CDPD networks operated by cellular carriers are widespread but traditionally underused. And despite the popularity of both analog and digital cellular and PCS offerings, to date most of the transmission on those networks has been voice traffic.

Padcom is working with public network carriers to help change that, Buchanan said. "We've found that carriers are very receptive," he said. "They want to load users on their systems, and they're looking for ways to make their technologies available."

Private networks operated by entities such as public safety organizations and utilities are used for data transmission but are plagued by coverage and capacity limitations.

The SmartPath platform is based on open standards so that private and public networks can be mixed and matched and new networks can be added as necessary.

"Padcom's mission is to provide end users with choices and allow them to interface with every possible solution," said David Whitmore, president of Padcom.

Padcom manages transport at a packet level so that different parcels of data may be sent over different networks, Buchanan said. End users can custom-configure their systems depending on their individual requirements, he added. "Not every mobile worker needs to have the same set of networks," Buchanan said.

The SmartPath router also has multiple ports that can be used to support several devices--such as a barcode scanner, global positioning system receiver and radio--operating in a single vehicle, he added.

Padcom works with end customers to build individual strategies on how to approach different network operators to negotiate the best connection rates.

The company also assists in determining network parameters and implementing its software on existing servers.

CHADMOORE EXPANDS FOOTPRINT Specialized mobile radio operator Chadmoore Wireless Group has completed its network buildout efforts to 31 more cities, raising its total number of markets to 48. The carrier now is seeking third-party distribution partners in its regions.

ALLENTOWN WELCOMES E911 Xypoint and Cellular One have launched a commercial trial of wireless E911 in Allentown, Pa. Xypoint's system identifies a wireless caller's 10-digit number and the cell site that is processing the call, helping Cellular One meet the first phase of a two-part FCC mandate.

CELL ONE, CORSAIR FINGER FRAUD Cellular One Group has signed an agreement with Corsair Communications to offer Corsair's PhonePrint RF fraud protection service to Cellular One members across the country. The PhonePrint system uses RF fingerprinting to identify cloned phones and is available through Corsair's service bureau.
