Broadband speeds along

High-speed lines connecting homes and small businesses to the Internet increased by 57% to 4.3 million lines in service during the first half of 2000, the FCC reports. DSL links in service rose by 157% to almost 1 million lines. The number of lines serving cable modems rose more slowly but remained more numerous- up 59% to about 2.2 million lines. In addition, high-speed subscribers now are present in 70% of the nation's ZIP codes.
