Bluetooth makes strides

Convergence Corp. hopes to take the lead in Bluetooth software with last week's introduction of DeviceTalk, a suite of Bluetooth-compatible software that will be available to wireless device manufacturers by the year's end. The suite will range from system-level software to enterprise servers and PC applications.

"It's an enabling technology for more user value," said Chuck Napier, vice president of marketing and business development for Convergence.

Bluetooth-equipped wireless handsets will use unlicensed frequencies to link to devices such as laptops without cables. While operators won't charge extra for this capability, the application is expected to encourage expanded use of wireless services, especially data.

"It makes it much easier. The bottom line is people tend to do things if it's easy," said Barney Dewey, an analyst for the Andrew Seybold Group. Bluetooth rids users of cable and requires only one configuration on laptops for data connections.

The first applications Convergence will develop likely will include file transfer and synchronizing contact lists, Napier said. One application could automatically synchronize contact lists between a personal digital assistant (PDA) or wireless phone and PC when users bring their PDAs or handsets in the vicinity of their PCs.

Napier also imagines an application in which wireless handsets could operate like cordless phones when they are inside users' homes.

Although, the first release of the Bluetooth standard won't be available to the public until this summer, members of the Bluetooth special interest group, including Convergence, are privy to interim drafts. Convergence's commercial product will comply with the final Bluetooth standard.
