A pioneer of Web content management, Vignette is coming off of a poor second quarter and some in the industry believe is preparing for acquisition by content management vendor OpenText. A historical proprietary system provider, Vignette has also been focusing on opening up its platform. Video Services is an open platform that lets its customers take control of the look and feel of the video player as well as how it’s integrated into the site, Gilley said. All the products launched this year are also open, letting customers add pieces of the Vignette ecosystem to their existing platform, even competing or open-source ones.
“We’ve taken a lot of inspiration not from other CMS competitors, but we’ve looked at the types of products media and entertainment customers would use such as PhotoShop and Adobe Premier, and we’ve also looked at consumer applications such as iPhoto and iTunes for inspiration,” Shepstone said. “We’re really trying to accomplish two things – give those customers in the industry a tool they are familiar with if they’ve used PhotoShop or those type of traditional image and media tools, and then also on the consumer side, try to make things – as much as possible – as simple as consumer applications.”
