“If network DVR comes to pass and we have that as an option as well, the combination of the two is terrific for us and will allow us to continue to extend our advantages versus cable,” Weber said. “If it doesn’t come to pass, obviously we have total-home DVR and are in a great place. We don’t have to have network DVR to deliver this kind of capability, and it looks like some of the cable guys are waiting on it. That just puts us in a better place.”
The issue was recently reversed in the US Court of Appeals in favor of cable companies operating remote storage or network DVR, but the battle may not be over yet, as content providers look to appeal the issue at the Supreme Court level. In the meantime, Weber said that AT&T plans to continue responding to consumer’s needs with new advanced services. The carrier will next add to its Total-home DVR service with the ability to schedule recordings and pause or control live TV from non-DVR receivers.
“Going forward, you can expect to see us continue to add applications that customers are looking for and that differentiate us relative to cable; that is just how we operate,” Weber said. “Nothing specific [is planned] at this point, but our customers are starting to expect us to really continue to enhance the service, and I think we’ll be able to really deliver for them.”
