IPTV captivates Europe

More than 60 IPTV services were available in Europe at the end of the second quarter of 2007, according to Screen Digest Television Intelligence, and that explosion comes, in part, because satellite TV operators are using landline networks to extend the reach of their content.

“Operators are piggybacking their services and relying on the high popularity of [digital satellite content] to boost their services,” said Richard Broughton, an analyst for Screen Digest.

In Germany, Deutsche Telekom's video content comes from satellite operator Premiere, while France's CanalSat and Canal Plus channels are widely available on the eight different IPTV services in that country. Sky Italia packages can be bought through Alice Home TV and Fastweb.
