This new, more diverse TV viewing landscape presents some difficult technical challenges. Video service providers need to think about how they can flexibly deliver content across all those platforms. They also need to think more creatively about partnerships and in some cases — such as the video search engine play — not worry about owning the content they are pointing users to. On the IPTV platform side, look for more developments such as the news out of Nokia Siemens Networks today that they’ve “opened up” their IPTV platform to enable a wider variety of IPTV services and applications. Microsoft also is touting the U-bar offering on its Mediaroom platform — deployed successfully by AT&T and others — for its ability to bring personalized Web content to the TV.

With developments like that helping them to cover all their bases, service providers may be in the position to answer the question “Who watches TV on TV anymore” with the answer “Who cares?”
