Heynen and Scherf both agreed that the TV app store model is a good bet, but unlike on mobile, it will be a slow progression over time. The TV is a much different beast, with heightened concerns for content quality and bandwidth limitations and a much lower consumer threshold for error. The app store explosion won't hit the TV until the business model is worked out, but that, too, will take time.

“One could take a lot of clues from mobile and see how that moved from closed to open,” Scherf said. “The one thing to keep in mind is because of the heavy duty infrastructure on the TV side of things and investments already made on cable, it will be a much slower process. Mobile handset replacement occurs with greater frequency than your set-top box. It's easier for a mobile operator to get a new, upgraded handset that supports open applications than it is for a set-top box.”
