Lingo, which was introduced in June last year, allows consumers unlimited calling in the U.S, Canada and Western Europe for $19.95 per month. In addition to the typical features one might expect to find in a consumer VoIP offering such as voice mail to e-mail delivery and call forwarding, the service includes what Primus terms International Universal Numbers that let Lingo customers select a local phone number from 14 different countries.
For Broadsoft, the contract is a demonstration that it can move beyond the office application, said Scott Wharton, vice president of marketing for Broadsoft.
"They demonstrate that people are taking our technology and using it not just in the business environment but also in the residential market," he said.
However, Wharton believes the idea of using international "local" numbers will be a hit with smaller businesses.
"You can have a company with a few employees scattered around and still have a global presence," he said.
