Tellabs cuts staff

Tellabs is trimming its work force by less than 1%, the company revealed in regulatory filings this week.

The equipment vendor is cutting about 30 workers from its office in Ballerup, Denmark, near Copenhagen.

At the end of the second quarter, Tellabs employed about 3800 people.

The cuts are part of a cost-saving plan Tellabs began last week in the hope of completing it by the first quarter of 2008. The company expects to report $6 million in charges related to these efforts at the end of this year’s third quarter.

Speculation regarding an acquisition of Tellabs by larger equipment vendors swirled earlier this year. But after a challenging second quarter, some analysts are now suspecting that likely acquirers will hold off for the time being.
