In an event announcing the new browser, Google co-founder Sergey Brin said that when Web browsers work better and faster, Google’s business benefits greatly. “Our business does well if people are using the Web a lot and are able to use it easily and quickly," he said.

In the end, Google said it built the browser its engineers would want to use themselves.

“We search, chat, email and collaborate in a browser,” wrote Sundar Pichai, Google’s vice president of product management, in a blog post announcing Chrome. “And in our spare time, we shop, bank, read news and keep in touch with friends -- all using a browser. “Because we spend so much time online, we began seriously thinking about what kind of browser could exist if we started from scratch and built on the best elements out there.”

A beta version of Google Chrome is available as a download.
