OFC/NFOEC: Corvis becomes component vendor
ANAHIEM, Calif.--Corvis, the optical equipment vendor that acquired, and then shrank within Broadwing Communications, made public for the first time this week that it is now in the business of selling its own optical components to equipment manufacturers and government entities.
For years, the company sold these components inside its own optical communications equipment. But Corvis disclosed this week that it has been selling components separately from its equipment since last fall. Customers include a mix of telecom and non-telecom clients, reflecting a range of telecom and non-telecom applications.
With a modest booth staffed by three at the OFC/NFOEC show this week, Corvis presented three component products: fiber Bragg gratings, Mach-Zehnder filters and athermal packages.
Though the company officially jettisoned the name Corvis after acquiring Broadwing Communications, assuming the Broadwing name, it still maintains a Web site for its equipment business with the address www.corvisequipment.com. Marketing materials for the new components business directed potential customers to the Web site www.corviscomponents.com.
