Metaswitch scores indy-style VoIP deals -- with APAC flavor

Vendor announces new wins at small island telcos throughout the Pacific

VoIP and IP infrastructure vendor Metaswitch Networks this week announced a series of customer wins with a series of smaller telcos that resemble U.S. independent carriers on the technical front – if not in climate.

In announcing a handful of new customers at the Pacific Telecommunications Council show in Honolulu this week, Metaswitch sounded themes that should ring true for smaller domestic service providers as well, said Carol Daniels, director of marketing for Metaswitch.

“[The deployments] remind me of many of our independent telephone providers back home – small footprints able to scale to get big, low power requirements, the benefits of satellite [connectivity for long-haul] and the ability to reduce costs because of IP,” Daniels said, noting that Asia Pacific has become something of a growth area of Metaswitch.

Among the deals and deployments Metaswitch announced this week:

·         OPT French Polynesia is modernizing its local and national networks using a Metaswitch solution

·         Marbel Telephone Sytems in General Santos, Philippines, which is using a Metaswitch VP2510 to power a new CLEC business while also working with the vendor to add IPTV services for it core Marbel Telephone customers

·         MCV Broadband in Guam, which is using Metaswitch gear to deliver quad play services to 50,000 subscribers in Guam and Northern Mariana Islands

·         In Hawaii, two operators recently combined to form Hawaii Dialogix Telecom, providing traditional, hosted PBX and triple play services to business and MDU customers, adding a second VP2510 switch to one previously deployed in 2008
