Today’s news comes just weeks after Ciena announced having won a contract to supply Sprint with WWP access gear, including the 5305. That deal, to provide backhaul transport to Sprint’s wireless network, is notable in that it may be the largest US deployment yet of PBB-TE, the connection-oriented carrier Ethernet transport technology that emerged two years ago at Nortel Networks.

When Ciena acquired WWP, it also cited interest at AT&T in using WWP’s gear for business Ethernet services.

Ciena used the introduction of the two new products to highlight its “programmable network service delivery” approach, through which the configuration and upgrade of devices like the 3911 and 3920 are done automatically, requiring less time and expertise among service provider installers.
