Canepa is a 10-year veteran of Sun Microsystems, where he served most recently as executive vice president of the network storage products group.

Canepa replaces Gordon Stitt, who helped found Extreme and served as its CEO for 10 years before announcing his retirement in May at the age of 50. Stitt will become chairman of Extreme’s board once Canepa takes over as CEO.

Canepa joins Extreme on the heels of two consecutive disappointing quarters for the Ethernet equipment vendor. The company has recently struggled with an insufficiently large sales staff and long sales cycles for the Black Diamond 12K carrier Ethernet platform it introduced earlier this year.
