Though neither company is offering up specific numbers, the deal is one of the most significant in a recent run of telcos delving into the video market. SureWest not only is one of the largest independents to make its selection of video vendors. It also is the first large carrier to decide on an IP-based video delivery mechanism.

“We believe it’s one of the more aggressive video deployments going on right on right now,” said Russ Sharer, vice president of sales and marketing for Occam.

Using the BLC 6000, SureWest will be able to create a video network that uses IGMP Multicasting at every node and delivers seamless operation with digital head-ends, middleware and set-top boxes. The company has yet to announce which vendor it will use for its set-tops.
