Consolidated picks Zhone

Consolidated Communications today announced that it will use Zhone Technologies’ Single Line Multi-Service architecture to provide the digital TV service it announced earlier for its Illinois operations.

The Matoon, Ill.-based firm will use Zhone’s Multi-Access Line Concentrator packet loop carrier to offer Triple-Play services over its copper phone lines.

A rapidly growing number of telephone companies globally will be offering IP-based TV service, according to a new study from TDG Research, "The Business of IPTV: Global Analysis & Forecasts."

TDG projected worldwide IPTV subscribers will pass the 20 million mark around 2010, but added that it would take "hybrid architecture," which include digital satellite with terrestrial solutions. "Telco TV" will be the initial play, but IPTV will ultimately have much bigger impact, the report concludes.
