AT&T provides local service to 3.5 million of its long-distance customers, though it has not yet revealed any numbers for DSL. The carrier is also busy expanding its local footprint and plans to have local access to 35 states by year-end, adding DSL to states incrementally throughout next year.
Though AT&T has no local facilities, it has partnered with Covad Communications to split local lines in markets in which it owns equipment. Covad has DSL equipment located in 1800 central offices in almost all of the major U.S. metro markets. Covad also has a footprint sharing agreement in place to provide SDSL in small and medium-sized markets.
