Digital divide deepens

Broadband in the Northeast, Verizon FiOS territory, is outpacing that of the rest of the nation, boasting eight of the top 10 fastest states in the second quarter, according to recent data from Akamai Technologies. And multimegabit-speed services are growing much faster there than in the two states outside the region that round out the list. Meanwhile, the slowest states are spread relatively equally among the local footprints of all three major telco incumbents. Setting the bar at 5 Mb/s, as Akamai did, perhaps denies proper credit to Maine, Michigan and Tennessee, each of which boasts at least 2 Mb/s to three-fourths of its broadband users.
