The new service offering features a flexible menu of modular options that allows an enterprise to pick and choose what it outsources, based on its internal needs and capabilities, said Jeff Phillips, vice president of marketing.

“About 30% of enterprises today go to managed services,” he said. “The rest are do-it-yourself shops. A lot of those are beginning to hit the tipping point. They don’t get the budget or the head count they need and as things have gotten more complex, it gets harder and harder to stay on top of things.”

One specific advantage of outsourcing RMM is to get ahead of network problems rather than being constantly in a reactive state.

“The way it works today is that when something breaks, the IT staff responds,” he said. “Our service will help predict problems before they impact service.”

The modular approach also allows enterprise customers to continue to control the part of the network they want to control, without requiring them to go to a full managed service approach in order to get help, Phillips said. Virtela’s new RMM service package includes four major service areas: Network Infrastructure: WANs, LANs, and WLANs; Security; IP Telephony; and Servers.

“We’ve seen already in taking this to sales, that there are companies who may have rolled out an IP telephony environment, and come to see that the ongoing OSS is going to be more than they expected,” Phillips said. “They can leverage a third party like Virtela to take part of that.”

Given economies of scale, Virtela also is usually able to help customers reduce the cost of the ongoing operation, he said.
