TimesTen focusing on 'concurrency'
TimesTen launched version 5.0 of the company’s core product, the TimesTen Real-Time Event Processing System. Among the biggest improvements in the new release is the company’s emphasis on the ability of multiple users to access and share the same data simultaneously, or what TimesTen is dubbing “concurrency.”

In practical terms, the new version of the system includes a non-blocking locking model that removes the read/write contention that results from data managers usage of “locks” to prevent human error in databases. The new version can be used in platforms such as pre-paid wireless to provide significant improvements in performance. The company counts both Ericsson and Amdocs among its pre-paid clients.
“We can do real-time access to things like subscriber balances,” said James Groff, CEO of TimesTen.
Compared to earlier releases of TimesTen, version 5.0 is able to double throughput. The redesigned locking model also provides a basis for future improvements.
Additionally, the company is setting up a processing system to support other applications as they are developed.
“Gone are the days of [telcos] purchasing monolithic applications,” said John Trembly, director of telecom and networking. “Now it’s all about building personal attributes. A lot of companies are trying to deliver an application framework that takes advantage of those.”
