Cingular commits to launching Microsoft devices
Newly-minted No. 1 wireless carrier Cingular Wireless gave Microsoft a boost today, announcing with the software giant that they are collaborating with other handset and PDA vendors to launch a host of new Windows Mobile devices over the Cingular network.

Cingular currently offers three Microsoft powered devices: the Motorola MPx220 quad-band “world phone,” the Siemens SX66 wireless and the Audiovox SMT5600—billed as the world’s smallest smartphone.
“Our number one goal is to maximize the wireless experiencee for our customers,” Cingular vice president of product management David Christopher said in a statement. “We must provide the best quality and coverage and the most comprehensive mobility solutions in the country.”
Though neither Cingular nor Microsoft committed to a specific number of new devices, the two companies said they would work with multiple other vendors to develop devices based on Microsoft's Smartphone and PDA operating systems. Cingular currently offers a range of smartphones—many of them gained through its acquisition of AT&T Wireless—including those running on the PalmSource, BlackBerry and Symbian operating systems.
